Transportations |
| Since the founding of the PRC in 1949, great efforts have been made by the Chinese government to establish a comprehensive transport system comprising civil flight, railways and water transport. |
Civil flight |
| Between 1949 and 1978, China invested several billion yuan to build and expand a group of airports. By the end of 1999, there were more than 140 airports opened to civil planes. Of them, more than 80 could accommodate large planes such as Boeing 777s, 767s, 757s, 747s and 737s, and A340s. By 1999, the total length of civil air routes in China was 1.522 million km, 3.5 times that in 1978, and 1,122 air routes had been opened, 128 of which were international air routes. The domestic airlines radiate from Beijing to all provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, all open cities, and border and remote areas. The international airlines reach more than 50 cities, including Tokyo, Bangkok, Jakarta, Paris, Frankfurt, Moscow, London, New York and Vancouver.Apart from the economic factors, traveling by air is the probably the first choice of most travelers. |
Railways |
| At present, train is still the primary way of transportation which transports a dominant portion of travelers, compared with planes and ships, who tour between cities. Beijing is the center for the railway line that heads north to south, consisting of the following lines: Beijing-Guangzhou Railway, Beijing-Shanghai Railway, Beijing-Kowloon Railway and the Beijing-Harbin Railway. The line that heads from west to east has its hub located in Zhengzhou . Apart from domestic rail lines, trains now can also run to Moscow of Russia, Pyongyang of North Korea and Hanoi of Vietnam. |
Water transport |
| Water transpot plays a very inportant role in china, the inland waterways are total 111,000km and there are about 5,000 berth in the harbors,of whom over 1000 are 10,000 ton class berth. The major inland navigable rivers are Heilongjiang, the Qiantang, the Yangtze River, the Pearl River, the Huangpu and the Grand Canal ,as well as Huaihe. So another method of travel in China is the waterways. |
